With sheets of rain pouring down on the Food for Good Mobile Feeding route, we didn’t know if there would be any children out to receive the breakfast and lunches the Food for Good team was serving.  “As we turned the corner we saw color in the distance, only to realize it was children and parents holding umbrellas in the rain waiting on the Food for Good truck to arrive,” stated Amy Chen (Project Manager – Food for Good).

Let’s back up just a minute…although Food for Good is ending its first month of the mobile

feeding program for 2010, this was day three of the first week. While still trying to get the word out that PepsiCo and its partners are delivering breakfast and lunches at over 100 individual stops each day, and with the downpour of rain on this day, it seemed unlikely anyone would show.  Between the PepsiCo volunteers, our AmeriCorps partners and even some very helpful apartment managers the rainy day worked out great.  “It was great to see the teamwork that was put in on that day by everyone involved.  We would not have been successful without them” stated Henry Tasby (Food for Good driver).  An apartment manager at one of the stops opened an empty apartment (normally used as a community room) in order for everyone to get out of the rain, and then an apartment coordinator directed the children and their parents into the makeshift location.  “I was impressed with the dedication of Henry (our driver) and all of the

volunteers – the rain didn’t seem to slow anyone down”  stated Emily Midoux (PepsiCo volunteer).  Amy Chen also said “The kids just kept steaming in to receive the meals.  Some of them had umbrellas and some of them came in soaking wet,  I told one of the kids we were wondering if anyone was going to show up in the rain and the child immediately replied, ‘We were wondering if you [Food for Good] were going to show up as well.’”

“So far, this was the only day that rain has even been a factor.”  Tasby stated “The rain seems to stop with every delivery point since that day, then start up again between locations.  It’s been great in that sense. After all, the strength of this whole country is helping people, especially those in need, and we’re trying to do our part rain or shine.”
