Social Media Inside the Company

A few months ago I was asked to provide my thoughts on an article being written byJeanne C. Meister and Karie Willyerd in an upcoming edition of People & Strategy. The title was “Five Myths and Realities When Considering Using Social Media Inside the Company” Read more

BlogWorld 2010

I had the opportunity to attend this year’s BlogWorld Conference in Las Vegas.  It was my first time attending the conference, and I found it to be a rewarding experience.  The crowd somewhat surprised me.  I was expecting a majority of attendees to be young millennials. Instead, I saw a mix of people of all ages and life stages.  A majority of attendees maintained their own blogs.  Some attendees had more Twitter followers than the populations of some small Caribbean Islands.  Can you imagine one person reaching out to 10,000 to 50,000 people instantly? This really brought home how expansive and influential the social community can be. What was even more interesting was seeing people who had exchanged notes and “Tweets” for several years without ever meeting live, finally getting to see their virtual friends face to face.  I personally saw two of these people “meet”... Location, Location, Location

josh_karpf_geomI recently had the opportunity to attend a great conference, GeoM, The Future of Location, at Microsoft NERD in Boston, put on by Allen Gerritsen and the Boston AdClub. The event focused on the future of location-based social networks such as Foursquare, Gowalla and Where.com. While the use of such networks, which allow users to broadcast locations and unlock rewards, is small to date, they have the potential to become a powerful way to connect users and their worlds. As marketers, they present a unique opportunity to present custom offers to consumers; and let them opt in or out as they please . As you may know, PepsiCo recently partnered with Foursquare to develop programs leveraging its platforms. But there are a variety of different services with potential. Recently, PepsiCo created Pepsi Loot, a mobile application which lets users locate and “check in” to Pepsi-serving restaurants near their current location. Every three check-ins unlocks a song. PBC Rebuilding Together: Pittsburgh

On Saturday, Oct. 2, The Mckees Rocks PBC team got together for a day of fun, work and giving back. As a team, we met at The Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church on what turned out to be a picture perfect day in Pittsburgh, 75 degrees and sunny. This had to have been a sign because that kind of weather doesn’t happen every day in Pittsburgh  We partnered up with Rebuilding Together and the West Pittsburgh Police Department to fix up a facility for a Police-sponsored youth athletics program designed to benefit up to 150 children. The project also benefited other areas of the church. We started out by landscaping the front entrance by pulling weeds and cleaning up the area, and then we planted new shrubbery and mulch. The kitchen area had a handicap accessible ramp installed as well as a new microwave and refrigerator. Three different areas... Read more

Performance with Purpose

Rebecca Oppenheimer with the PepsiCo Dream MachineIt seems like a lot of big companies today talk the talk… and it's no wonder when you think about how easy it is with all the Tweeting, posting to Facebook and blogging going on in our world. But how many companies really back up all the talk and actually walk the walk? Maybe it's just me, but it's hard to sort through all the corporate do-gooder chatter and figure out what's real and then even harder to do something besides just listen to it. I'm lucky that working at Pepsi I get to see firsthand that it's not all smoke and mirrors and that I can get involved. The people here are seriously committed to making a difference by leveraging PepsiCo's status as one of the biggest food and beverage companies in the world. I am proud to tell people where I work and proud that PepsiCo recognizes that all of us have the power to do real, local, everyday good and can start doing it now. Read more
