Log in to work from a beach in Tahiti? If there is Internet access – why not? At SXSW this week, I sat in on a discussion called “Technomadism – Becoming a Technology Enabled Nomad.” The session explored the life of a technomad – someone who works entirely remotely, embracing technology and throwing conventional office life out the window.

The discussion leaders, Chris Dunphy and Cherie Ve Ard, have been traveling together full-time for the past four years in an 85 square foot RV. They both have backgrounds in software development and continue their work as consultants on the road. Importantly, they are passionate about the lifestyle they lead as seasoned guides for others considering technomadism (there were many in the room!)

Chris and Cherie recognize it’s a big step to make the transition to life without a home base. Among the major considerations they shared with others in the job space were caring for pets, managing bills and dealing with taxes. The duo discussed travel stories and the innovative ways they have made life on the road work.

“Many traditional companies embrace the idea of working from home but not necessarily working from the dessert or working from Thailand,” said Cherie. She’s right. While we are in an era where plenty of companies embrace working remotely, many positions still rely on true face-to-face interaction that e-mail and Skype just can’t provide.

At PepsiCo, a big emphasis is placed on work/life balance for employees. As someone who faces a fairly long commute, I appreciate the flexibility to work remotely and love that new technologies have enabled us to do this seamlessly. Whether you are a homebody working in a corporate environment or a freelancing jetsetter, it’s important to find an employer that will embrace your needs.
