PepsiCo and IDB join efforts during the International Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility

Last Wednesday May 25th, Armando Mendiola, General Manager of PepsiCo Foods Central America and Caribbean, attended the International Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility, where he conducted a workshop on the importance of the incorporation of sustainable agriculture programs in the region for the development of local producers and for the creation of shared value solutions for our business, the planet and the communities where PepsiCo is present. These programs, mentioned Mendiola, are not possible without successful public-private partnerships, such as the one that we recently signed with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), last February during the visit of our President and CEO, Indra K. Nooyi, to Mexico. The alliance aims to spur social and economic development in the region through a number of critical issues, such as water and sanitation, recycling, sport for development, agricultural value chains, disaster relief, food security and nutrition and sharing knowledge... When Will TV Start Paying Me Back?

A few years ago I was in a focus group/think tank where we had a roundtable discussion on innovation and technology. This was before the term ‘Social Media’ was ubiquitous, before Facebook was open outside of colleges and when advertisers and marketers were still looking at Second Life as a viable medium. Blogs were growing at an astonishing pace and conversations were still taking place on localized platforms, yet to be scattered around the web thanks to microblogs and dynamic commenting engines. Backing up a bit, I’ve always had a bit of an attraction towards marketing, advertising and news and how technology and culture impact the consumption of content. In the focus group, I said plainly, “Not only do I not want to pay for cable, I want to be paid to watch TV.” This set off a few laughs. That was six years ago. Fast forward... Read more

Dream Green School Makeover Prize Awarded

Yesterday, on behalf of the Dream Machine Recycle Rally, I had the privilege to present the program’s first grand prize, a $100,000 Dream Green School Makeover, to St. Pascal School of Chicago, Illinois. The school recycled more than 2,286 plastic bottles and aluminum cans—the most per student of all eligible participants. St. Pascal plans to use the funds to build an energy-efficient computer lab powered by solar energy, along with a few smaller environmentally-focused projects.  We’re thrilled to help St. Pascal along its journey of greening the school and congratulate them on their achievement! It is so exciting to be a part of this first year of the Dream Machine Recycle Rally. The Dream Machine Recycle Rally –a pillar of the broader Dream Machine program – is a nationwide school recycling program designed to raise awareness among students, grades K-12, about the importance of recycling, and... Greening the Pepsi Cup

If you haven’t heard, providing more sustainable packaging is a major commitment of PepsiCo as we aim to minimize the impact of our business on the environment. Research shows consumers support our efforts: according to a Beveragepulse.com study, 94% of consumers are concerned about the eco effects of beverage packaging. Listening to consumers, PepsiCo’s Foodservice division, which brings Pepsi products to restaurants, stadiums, theme parks and colleges and universities (the latter leading requests for green cup options), has announced it’s now offering a portfolio of eco-friendly recyclable cups and compostable cups made from renewable sources. Moreover, we’ve ensured that the cups are of highest quality and competitively-priced with standard cup options. Watch the video to take a look at their cool new, green designs! While many people think to recycle plastic bottles and aluminum cans, we hope to make consumers and customers more aware that they can properly... Read more

Testing Local Flavors Drives Performance

This week’s feature by John Seabrook in the New Yorker is chock full of great insight into PepsiCo efforts to reshape our business for long-term growth through our commitment to innovation. One of the more interesting sections comes when he interviews Dr. Greg Yep, PepsiCo’s senior vice-president of long-term research. Dr. Yep describes PepsiCo’s cadre of “trekkers” who travel the globe looking for new and innovative flavors that researchers can study for possible use in our products. “We go into local villages, street markets, wherever, and we ask people, “Hey, how’d you make this taste sweet? Did you put sugar in it, or something else? We collect samples of everything – fruits, plants, roots, even bugs. Might be beetles – they have a nutty flavor. Might be bee larvae. Might be a certain variety of chili pepper which has a sweetness in the stem.” As you can see... Read more
