Who is Austin Man?

Davos is a beautiful town in Switzerland with a permanent population of around 12,000.  Every year, thousands more descend on the mountain resort for the World Economic Forum. “During the five-day annual meeting in 2009, over 2,500 participants from 91 countries gathered in Davos. Around 75 percent (1,170) were business leaders, drawn principally from its members, 1,000 of the world’s top companies.”  (source: Wikipedia) For one week, Davos is at the nexus of the world; it is an event that acts as the world’s arbiter, enabling leaders to resolve international conflicts and matters of global concern like climate change, sustainability, global trade, and health issues. Austin, however, is arguably at the nexus of the world for approximately 10 days every March. Every year for SxSW (South by Southwest) thousands upon thousands attend the film, music and interactive festival, which grows in size every year. Entrepreneurs, artists, and... Read more

A Truly Global Event

The first time I visited in London, it was for less than 24 hours at the tail-end of a two month-long trip across Europe. From as far North as Helsinki to as far South as Naples, I was completely exhausted by the time I reached England. I had only 24 hours to see the city and, frankly, didn’t do much of anything. My following trip was just as short and I saw just as little as before. This week, however, I finally got to experience the real London. Social Media London. Though I left the city as worn out as I did a decade earlier, I came home with much more than a sore back and empty wallet. New York City, with few exceptions, is incredibly similar to London. This week, the two cities are identical. Over 100 events were produced around London and, at each... Read more

PepsiCo and the NFL Tailgate on Wall Street

If you happened to walk in front of the New York Stock Exchange the afternoon of February 4, you had a better chance of a wayward football whizzing past your face as a trader in an NFL jersey chased it down than you did of finding yourself in the typical army of blue oxfords and khakis walking down Wall Street. In honor of Super Bowl weekend, PepsiCo hosted a multi-activity event, along with the New York Stock Exchange, called the NFL Experience tailgate. The mid-day fiesta featured food, games sponsored by Doritos and Pepsi MAX, a Gatorade photo booth and a giant screen playing the “Crash The Super Bowl” finalist commercials on loop right in the middle of the financial center of the world. Traders were allowed, nay encouraged, to wear their favorite NFL jerseys to work in place of their usual business casual uniform which... Read more
