A Record-Setting Day for Frito-Lay at the State Fair of Texas!

They say “everything’s bigger in Texas” and that rang true yesterday, when Fritos brand corn chips took over the State Fair of Texas, to create the world’s largest Frito Pie. The popular corn chips were born in 1932 when Elmer Doolin purchased a recipe from a local businessman and began making the first Fritos chips right from his mother’s kitchen with a converted potato ricer. Doolin’s mother, Daisy Dean Doolin, created recipes to help market Fritos corn chips by using them as an ingredient in a wide range of dishes, including her now-famous Fritos Chili Pie. Yesterday, Fritos made history once again by celebrating the 80th anniversary of the corn chips with a 1,300 pound Fritos Chili Pie. To read more about the event, and get the recipe, check out this post on Frito Lays’ Snack Chat. Read more

Does Personalization Equal Optimization? Countless start-ups and entrepreneurs have flocked to SXSWi eager to build the right connections, ignite the first deal, and all the while, promote feverishly.  Naturally, that’s the SXSW experience.  They want validation.  They want to breakout.  They want it to be their time. Livestreamed on PepsiCo’s exclusive SXSW blog, Dennis Crowley, Co-Founder of Foursquare, discussed this “tip” reaction.  Joining Mashable’s Pete Cashmore for their panel, “Enabling New Experiences & Creating Serendipity Through Check-ins,” insight was gleaned around once you break, then what?  Loyalty is a big factor.  Give your loyal users what they want.  Accordingly to Crowley, Foursquare’s recently announced 3.0 with the new Explore tab does just that. “Check-ins are most interesting in the archived history sense. What does it mean about the places I go? Collecting all of this information you can learn about what people are doing.  For 3.0, we want... Read more

A Sustainable Future in Mexico

Today, our CEO Indra Nooyi will be in Mexico to announce a new partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank to develop a ground-breaking sustainable agriculture alliance. The inaugural project of the larger partnership will essentially finance the production of sunflower crops. Through a combination of microloans to local farmers, guaranteed purchase of the ensuing crop and technical training and support, PepsiCo and the IDB will not only create a supply line of heart-healthy high oleic sunflower oil for their Sabritas and Gamesa-Quaker brands, but also provide a source of income for 850 Mexicans and their families. You can read a full account by the New York Times, here. The project is quite essentially PepsiCo’s commitment to Performance with Purpose.  We believe that a corporation has the responsibility to invest in a sustainable future for itself and its consumers. Our partnership with the IDB is simultaneously globally focused while... Read more

Social Media Week 2011

This week is Social Media Week all around the world. Once again, PepsCo is involved and we’re thrilled to be participating! In fact, last year we launched the Pepsi Refresh  Project at Social Media Week which speaks to the how important we think it is at PepsiCo. Sitting at the launch press conference last Thursday, I was reminded of the impressive global growth of this little event.  Executive Director of SMW, Toby Daniels, walked through the massive changes. There are over 15 cities globally taking part in the event, planning micro-conferences and networking sessions this week; each coordinating on their own, yet feeding ideas and collaborating with the other host cities.  It’s a massive endeavor. So much energy is coming out of each host city, that you can’t help but be excited about the power of social media. Hearing NY Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith at the... Read more
